On Friday afternoon, Julia Shields, 45, of Chattanooga, Tennessee went for a joyride in her car through a white suburban area. More specifically, wearing a flak jacket (bulletproof vest) and armed with a 9MM handgun, Shields engaged in a mobile shooting spree in her own neighborhood.
Police received multiple complaints of a white female shooter in a dark sedan and raced to the well-manicured upscale neighborhood. The first call received was “shots fired” and the authorities arrived on the scene at 3:52 p.m. Shields had fired at houses, windows and multiple vehicles — disabling some of the vehicles in the process. When the police initially caught up to Shields, they found her parked in the parking lot of the Stuart Heights Baptist Church.
Upon seeing the officers Shields then took off on a local highway, with the authorities in hot pursuit. Shields continued to fire out of her vehicle, endangering civilians as well as police officers. When her vehicle was cornered, close to the place where the shooting rampage initially began, she was taken into custody without incident…but not for lack of trying.
When the officers converged on Shields, she pointed her weapon at them and attempted to fire.
Fortunately, no one was injured while she was disarmed.
Shields is currently in the Hamilton County Jail with no bond set. She has a court date scheduled for January 5th.
Conservatives have repeatedly insisted that protests from the black community since unarmed teen Michael Brown was shot to death by a police officer in Ferguson, MO and Eric Garner was choked to death by a police officer in New York City have been nothing but propaganda set forward by “the liberal media.” But here is yet another example of the systemic differences when a white person commits a dangerous and felonious crime compared to when a black person commits an equivalent offense.
To the best of my memory, neither Michael Brown nor Eric Garner committed any offenses that rise to the level of what Ms. Shields has done. But there will continue to be individuals from the conservative front that will disparage the concept of systemic racism and deny that white privilege exists.
It’s a good thing for Ms. Shields she wasn’t guilty of “Driving While Black,” otherwise, let’s face it, she’d be dead right now.
