Just weeks before the election, FBI Director James Comey, a longtime Republican, decided to nudge the country towards Trump by releasing a damaging (and completely false) announcement suggesting the FBI was “relaunching” its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. Absolutely nothing came of it, no new investigation or criminal conduct ever surfaced, but the media and Trump had a field day punishing Hillary Clinton over it.
Comey had given the ammunition to Hillary’s enemies to finally bury her. And the media, salivating at a juicy scandal, jumped on it without scrutiny. It led to embarrassing headlines like those on display by the New York Times:
Comey’s letter was irresponsible, political, and potentially illegal. Making matters worse, we know now that at the very same time that he was leaking false information about Hillary to the press, he was sitting on a pending investigation into Trump’s connections with Russia. Unlike Hillary, he was careful not to let that information get out lest it might affect the way people voted.
Many election experts cite Comey as perhaps the key factor to getting Trump elected. Had he not decided to smear Hillary with a dishonest announcement, polls and voter data suggests, Trump would not have been elected.
And nobody seems more grateful to Comey for his undemocratic actions than Trump. The pair finally met on Sunday and the footage says it all. These are two men who are reveling in the fact that they pulled it off. Needless to say, many Americans were sickened by what they saw.

That’s Comey, beaming and giddy, saddling up to Trump after he gets a kiss blown his way. The two then briefly share a friendly hug and a handshake. Trump, smiling, tells the cameras “He’s become more famous than me.” Everyone laughs.
They got away with it.
