Everyone probably recalls the now infamous video of the crazy woman with the uncombed hair who called then candidate Obama an “Arab.” McCain did the right thing and said that Obama was a “decent family man” who he just happened to disagree with.
That was a more innocent time. Today’s John McCain would probably not call President Obama a decent family man and even if he did, very few Republicans would.
Rick Santorum had his very own crazy lady, although we didn’t get to see her hair, at the South Carolina National Security Summit. The woman, who frighteningly, is a retired teacher, ranted about amnesty and the border, Obama, who should have been removed from office long ago, and something about a nuke in Charleston and Admirals and Generals.
Clearly, this woman spends her days glued to Fox News with her curtains drawn and her windows barred. For all we know, she could be John McCain’s woman, seven years of Fox News and Rush Limbaugh later, but it’s doubtful because the right-wing media has created a whole army of fearful old white people and right-wing politicians are doing everything in their power to keep them very, very frightened, all while trying to appear statesmanlike.
And that’s where Rick Santorum found himself - on the precipice of trying to appear sane while encouraging insanity. Santorum didn’t handle it very well.
