Bill Maher is a fine dry, white wine to Stephen Colbert’s cheese. That isn’t a put down to Colbert, both men are absolutely the best at what they do, but a commentary on the pairing of the two. Speaking on Trump, the two tend to create a wonderful balance and some very interesting mental gymnastics.
Friday night’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was a prime example of this, and begins with some cheesy humor about serving Maher a “steaming bowl of Trump.” Maher has warned people that the GOP would put “party ahead of country,” and he was right. However, he also had doubted that Trump would win the nomination and Colbert served him the bowl of Trump, “Trump steaks, Trump wine,” and of course, “something orange.”

The scary fact is that Trump has been able to tap into the idea that “white men” have “gotten a raw break in America,” and Hillary Clinton is playing the woman card because she was “born female.” Trump has branded himself a return to white male privilege. Scarily, it is working and we just don’t seem to have to key to getting the angry white guy demographic to think LOGICALLY about their choices, while Trump has no problem encouraging their emotional responses.
How do we defeat Trump? Well, Maher has a great idea. We take a cue from serial killer movies.
Maher said:
But I do take your point that we have not quite figured out how to defeat Donald Trump yet and I think what we have to do is what they do in serial killer movies. In serial killer movies, the cops can never figure out how to defeat the serial killer. So, they get another serial killer to work with them to figure out how to, and that’s what we do. … We have to find another narcisisstic billionaire. I am thinking El Chapo.
We have to recognize that Putin, also suggested as the narcissist we could recruit, likes Donald Trump far too much to be useful in this tongue-in-cheek possible solution. We aren’t looking for a genius, that is for sure, that would be an unequal match. Definitely, a bully, though, because as Maher said, “[Trump] never lost touch with his high school bully.”
While this is probably not a viable solution in this format, it points out the difficulty we have in pointing reality out to a group of people who simply refuse to see it. It also drives home WHY we must vote with Trump’s strongest opponent. Not to mention, Hillary is just a flat out better choice for the country than Trump, our only real chance is in coming together to overcome emotional idiocy with rational thought.
Maher is on a roll this week attacking Trump and as he points out, Trump knows branding, but not much else. When asked about “Brexit,” he didn’t know what it was, or “WHO THE KURDS WERE.”
The idea that someone is going to be president and just learning things. He’s like a baby with a mobile [over his head].
