A woman in Michigan is no longer welcome in Planet Fitness after she made a fuss about a transgender woman using the locker room.
Yvette Cormier was in the Planet Fitness locker room in Midland, Michigan on February 28th when a transgender woman came in while she was changing her clothes. Outraged, Cormier went to management at the gym to complain that there was a “man” in the locker room.
Gym management told Cormier that the person was a transgender woman and within her rights to use the room just like all other women in the gym. Still outraged, and obviously intolerant, Cormier called Planet Fitness’ corporate offices to complain. She was told the gym has a strict “no judgement zone policy” and agreed with management at the Midland gym.
I was stunned and shocked. He looked like a man.. He did not look like a woman. This is very unprofessional. This is very scary. They told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that’s the sex he wants to be. [Source]
Pissed off that the gym did not agree with her narrow-minded view of the world, Cormier started telling other people at the gym about the “man” in the locker room. Planet Fitness got wind of it, asked her to stop but she refused. So the gym canceled her membership. Gym spokeswoman McCall Gosselin explains:
Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled. The gym did the right thing. this woman was told multiple times that the member in question was a woman and she continued to not only complain but embarrass and disrespect the woman by calling her a man. She is upset that her membership was canceled and complained that she was being punished. She’s not wrong. The gym is punishing her; they are punishing her for being a bigot and letting her know that her kind is not welcome there.
