Madison Barnie (Madi) is an undergraduate at Brigham Young University, a Mormon college with Medieval ideology regarding student behavior, which is spelled out in their Honor Code. This code can also apparently also force a female student, who is raped off campus by someone who is not a student of Brigham Young, to submit herself for an honor inquiry so that the university is assured she is still worthy of attending.
From the Honor Code:
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men….If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. (Thirteenth Article of Faith.)
You see, because she reported the sexual assault that occurred at her off-campus apartment to the police (charges have been filed and a criminal trial will start later this year) Madi will now be forced to relive her victimization in front of the Honor Code Office to prove she didn’t make her rapist rape her. If Madi goes through with the Honor Code inquisition, she will have to discuss her sexual assault with the Honor Code Gestapo office, (so they can determine whether or not she is now sullied and unable to continue her education) which she can’t do until after the trial scheduled for later this year.
Brigham Young had previously stated, incorrectly, that they were required by law to investigate Madi’s honor before she will be allowed to register for any more classes, though the whackjobs have generously decided to allow her to finish her current course load. Madi has now responded by filing a Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights against the pious asshats at Brigham Young, as she should.
Barney will also be part of a protest planned for outside the Provo campus on Wednesday at noon. Roughly 75 people have signed up to attend the event, where protesters plan to deliver the 60,000-plus signatures from Barney’s online petition to BYU President Kevin Worthen.
While Madi is probably Mormon, she doesn’t deserve to be treated as if her value as a student at Brigham Young is dictated, not by academic skill or acumen, but by her chastity — even in the case of rape. You see, they could blame her assault on her, and remove her from their college for something as arbitrary as having allowed her attacker to enter her bedroom.
Apparently the Mormon church, and it’s institution, still believe that a woman causes her own assault with sin or just looking good when the truth is that rapists cause rape because they are power hungry sociopaths. No woman should be forced to defend her honor after a victimization today, for any reason.
