Here we go again, another “responsible gun owner” who clearly should not have been allowed to purchase a gun.
Paul Rater, a 62-year-old grandfather from Buckeye, Arizona, left his 5-year-old granddaughter in the desert, alone, with a “loaded and cocked .45 caliber handgun.”
On Sunday, he took the child for a ride and the two were reported as missing persons about four hours later. Oddly enough, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says the grandfather was found at bar having a burger and drinks while a firefighter came across the little girl crying in the desert.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio quoted the little girl as saying, “I don’t know why papa left me, I was calling for him.”
The instructions Rater gave the wee-one were simple:
“Shoot the bad guys.”
Because. . . a 5-year-old should have a gun. She obviously has a grasp of gun safety and could quickly defend herself against “bad guys.” Fortunately, she seemed to have more sense than her senior family member. She didn’t shoot herself and she didn’t shoot the firefighter who heard her crying and rescued her.
She has been reunited her with her mother.
Deputies said the man claims to have walked for hours seeking help after his truck broke down, yet he failed to mention the fact that he left the little girl in the desert to anyone after arriving at the bar.
Fortunately, Rater was promptly arrested on child abuse and endangerment charges.
Next time a conservative argues that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” – remind them that mental health evaluations and background checks are advocated for people, not guns. This guy absolutely should have been scrutinized more closely before being allowed to have a tool that kills. This guy shouldn’t have had a gun. Ever.
