Amy Schumer, distributor of inconvenient truths, has interesting timing. Given that there has been such attention being given to Josh Duggar and the “attention” he gave his sisters and cousin–and the covering up of the facts–her timing with this parody is very interesting.
It’s an illustration of the human mind’s ability to live in denial, no matter what facts and testimony are presented to us. Because if we acknowledge that we like something that is really, really horrible then doesn’t that make us horrible too? And, in fact, there are some people that can relate a little better than others because they in fact have, or would have, done the same thing if they could get away with it.
If convicted, the next time you put on a rerun of ‘The Cosby Show,’ you may wince a little, might feel a little pang. And none of us deserve that! We don’t deserve to feel that pang. We deserve to dance like no one’s watching, and watch like no one’s raping.
It’s a sad commentary about our society when people are willing to believe their television hero–someone they have never actually met, or will ever likely meet–is so “celebrated” that they get away with rape while a large percentage of society cheers them on. Or forgives them in the name of “God.”
Social media has certainly made it easy for people to show their true colors, and while some of them are hideous, at least we can be thankful for knowing who we’re actually dealing with rather than a façade.
