Terrorism. The very word sets many Americans into a panic. “They hate our freedom!” we were told by George W. Bush. Our politicians and our media are always telling us that the next terrorist attack is right around the corner. They’re coming for YOU! Be afraid. Be very afraid, America.
A German designer named Milan Vuckovic has put together a short video that graphically illustrates where terror attacks have occurred since 2000. To keep the video simple and uncluttered, Vuckovic only depicts attacks in which more than 20 people were killed. As a timeline scrolls across the bottom of the screen, each country affected by an attack lights up, with a symbol showing the approximate number of people killed, and the group responsible for that attack.
Many Americans may be amazed by what they see in this video. There are two things that everybody should take note of as they watch. First, the United States lights up once and only once during the entire timeline — on September 11, 2001. Second, there were no terror attacks in Iraq until after the U.S. invasion in 2003. After that, Iraq is like terrorism central.
Watch this short, sobering video, which shows that the country that appears to be the most panicked over terrorism, the U.S., is actually one of the safest places from terrorists and terrorism in the world.
