Back when Trump was just a punchline in the private sector, then Late Show host David Letterman called out Trump for his harassment of President Obama’s college transcript.
During an interview with the always insufferable Dr. Phil, who’s naturally pals with Trump, Letterman said this about Trump’s suggestion that President Obama somehow unfairly got into Harvard Law School:
“It’s all fun, it’s all a circus, it’s all a rodeo, until it starts to smack of racism. And then it’s no longer fun,” Letterman said.
Dr. Phil was quick to defend Trump, but Letterman wouldn’t stop pressing, via the EW:
“So you thought it racism?” Dr. Phil asks.
“Well yes,” Letterman replied. “Do you consider him to be a racist?”
“I do not,” Dr. Phil responded.
“How can you say things like that if you’re not a racist?” Letterman asked.
“I don’t think he always thinks everything through,” Dr. Phil said. “I think sometimes he’s a little from the hip, and I don’t think he has a racist bone in his body.”
Trump officials can shout “says who” all they want in the face of overwhelming evidence, but the fact remains that Trump is about as popular with African-Americans as D.W. Griffith. From inciting violence at rallies in which blacks were being violently tossed out, to associating with notorious white supremacists, Letterman was quite prescient in calling Trump a racist in 2011.
