There are few people with more power in this world than the people who write history text books. They mold minds and give perspective to all that’s happening in today’s world.
When history is taught accurately, it can give students more empathy and the ability to somewhat see the future. When it’s taught inaccurately, we have a new generation of adults who know nothing but propaganda.
Many of the nation’s text books are published in Texas and many of those literally try to white wash history. One mother in Texas, Roni Dean-Burren, was mortified when her son came home with his geography book, which for some reason (believe it or not) contained a dose of immigration history – white washed immigration history.
In his book, which she notes had input from several PhDs, slaves were referred to as “workers” who emigrated to this country.
“‘Immigrants,’ yeah, that word matters,” Dean-Burren said, “(Reading from the text) ‘The Atlantic slave trade between the 1500s and the 1800s brought millions of workers from Africa to the southern United States to work on agricultural plantations. So (slavery) is now considered ‘immigration’.”
