Last month, the world was outraged when a teenage boy, Ahmed Mohamed, was arrested by police for bringing a homemade clock to school. As the internet rallied behind the 14-year-old — and conservatives went insane with Islamaphobia and hate — President Obama tweeted his support of him and invited him to the White House. That meeting finally took place on Monday at Astronomy Night.
During the event, President Obama said:
We have to watch for and cultivate and encourage those glimmers of curiosity and possibility, not suppress them, not squelch them. Not only are the young people’s futures at stake, but our own is at stake.
This was obviously a dig at the right-wing maniacs who thought that Ahmed deserved to be arrested for his invention. The president is 100 percent correct — the worst possible thing that we can do for our country is stomp all over the dreams and curiosity of our children; they are the future after all.
