How often have we seen the videos of a homeless person giving all they have to someone they feel is in greater need than they are? To the right, homelessness is a side effect of poverty and laziness; homeless people are the filthy dregs of society.
Not only here, but around the world, that kind of sentiment is common. People who have just can’t seem to understand the plight of people who have not. An incident in Brazil just taught people all over the world that having material things and not wanting for food and clean water doesn’t make you a better person.
Sixty-one-year-old Erasmo Francisco Rodrigues de Lima, a homeless man, saw an injustice he felt he had no choice but to intervene in, and it cost him his life. When he saw a gunman holding a woman hostage, he went on the offensive, giving the woman the chance to escape with minor injuries. He was shot and killed just before he managed to get police the clean shot they needed to take out the kidnapper.
The next time you see a homeless person on the street, remember – we all have the capacity for deeds of great selflessness, especially when we don’t have much to protect.
Watch this amazing homeless hero die to save a woman’s life.
