Donald Trump is outraged, OUTRAGED that Hillary Clinton would dare say that his anti-Muslim rhetoric was making him “ISIS’s best recruiter.” And he wants an apology. But the way he went about demanding it is priceless.
Trump talked by phone to Matt Lauer on NBC’s “Today Show” on December 21, still fuming over Clinton’s comment in the Democratic debate Saturday night. Here is what Clinton said:
They are going to people showing videos of Donald Trump insulting Islam and Muslims in order to recruit more radical jihadists.
Trump responded by saying on “Meet the Press,”
Nobody has been able to back that up. It’s nonsense. It’s just another Hillary lie. She lies like crazy about everything, whether it’s trips where she was being gunned down in a helicopter or an airplane, she’s a liar and everybody knows that. But she just made this up in thin air.
He repeats that when he speaks to Lauer:
I will demand an apology from Hillary. She should apologize. She lies about emails, she lies about Whitewater, she lies about everything. She will be a disaster about everything as president of the United States.”
This was already a “pot, meet kettle” moment, as Trump’s Politifact scorecard reveals. The fact-checking website has given a rating of “mostly false,” “false,” or “pants on fire” to 58 out of 77 Trump statements they have reviewed. But it gets better.
Lauer, doing the job of a journalist, asks Trump,
Don’t you open yourself up to the very same criticism when it comes to your claims that thousands of Muslims celebrated on 9/11? There is no tape, there is no proof. So are you guilty by your same standard?
Now, a wiser, less arrogant person might have used this opportunity to change the subject. But not Trump, who insists that “people saw it,” and that he has been “totally exonerated.” He tells Lauer that he can send him a “Breitbart story” that proves he was correct. Um, Donald, intelligent people fact-check it when Breitbart says “the sun came up this morning.”

Right-wing blogs have been circulating a recording of a news broadcast from just after 9/11, where a reporter claims that “people” told him that Muslims in New Jersey were celebrating the collapse of the twin towers. But there is no footage of it, not even a citizen being interviewed on camera claiming that he or she saw it. There’s just that reporter’s unconfirmed statement. In the sane world that hardly counts as being “totally exonerated.”
