During the campaign, Donald Trump promised over and over that if he became president, he would put Hillary Clinton in jail for her “crimes.” But he admitted on Friday night that this was just a bunch of B.S. to get votes and he never had any intention after actually following through with his vows to “lock her up.”
While Trump was speaking at his victory rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, his supporters started to chant “lock her up,” just like they have done for months. But this time, Trump had a different response than usual.
“No, it’s okay,” Trump said. “Forget it. That plays great before the election. Now, we don’t care, right?”
“Locking her up” was a central theme for Trump when he was campaigning. During the second presidential debate, he promised that he would prosecute Clinton for using a private email server while she was Secretary of State, vowing to put her behind bars if he ever made it to the Oval Office.
“I didn’t think I’d say this, but I’m going to say it, and I hate to say it, but if I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there has never been so many lies, so much deception, there has never been anything like it and we’re going to have a special prosecutor,” he said.
But shortly after he won the election, Trump started dropping this campaign promise just like he has with all the others. He claimed that he didn’t “want to hurt the Clintons.”
“She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways,” Trump said.
Now, he admits that this has nothing to do with his concern for Hillary and everything to do with the fact that he was full of sh*t from the very beginning. Trump’s supporters aren’t exactly thrilled with his decision to go back on his word. A recent poll found that 68 percent of Trump voters want him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her.
