Brandon Brooks, the 15-year-old from Texas who shot the video of a police officer attacking teens at a pool party, is speaking to the media about what happened.
In an interview with NewsFix, Brooks describes what led up to the scene that was captured on his video, and offers some thoughts about why officer Eric Casebolt behaved the way he did. In the video, it appears that Casebolt, and other officers on the scene, virtually ignore Brooks as he records what is taking place, while attempting to round up other kids who were at the party. This is where I mention what you have probably already figured out: Brooks is white. The kids that Casebolt was behaving so aggressively towards were black.
Brooks tells NewsFix:
I was one of the only white people in the area when that was happening. You can see in part of the video where he tells us to sit down, and he kinda like skips over me and tells all my African-American friends to go sit down.
Brooks says that he believes the incident was definitely racial in nature, and it has certainly brought out the racists on social media. He has this to say to those who have been leaving racist remarks on his YouTube video: “What if that was your kid getting slung to the ground? Would you still be talking about them in the way that you are?”
This started out as a repeat of the time-honored American tradition of teens crashing a pool party. But it turned into another instance of a police officer losing control, and provides further proof that our “post-racial” society still has a lot of work to do.
