Diena Thompson of Orange Park, FL lived through every parent’s worst nightmare. Six years ago Thursday, her beautiful seven-year-old daughter Somer was abducted, raped, and murdered by a psychopath.
Somer was on her way home from school when Jarred Harrell took her to his parents’ former house, which was in foreclosure, and ended her life far too early in the most horrific way. She was found discarded like trash in a Georgia landfill two days later.
Harrell is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
The house was eventually foreclosed on, and the bank transferred ownership to The Somer Thompson Foundation, started by Diena in her daughter’s name.
The Florida Times-Union reported that Diena donated the house to the Orange Park Fire Department to use for training exercises.
In what had to be a bittersweet moment for Diena, she was the one who got to set the house ablaze. She told the Times-Union:
“I get to burn their house down. I’m the big bad wolf this time knocking down your door, not the other way around. It’s really nice to know that I’m not ever going to have to drive in this neighborhood again and see this piece of trash.”
No plans have been finalized for the property, but there has been talk about a memorial garden for Somer.
