Stepping right out of the Inquisition, with a stop somewhere near the Salem Witch Trials, a rural Oklahoma schoolteacher is under fire for her treatment of one of her left-handed, Pre-K students.
Zayde Sands, a lively and seemingly normal young boy, came home from Okemeh, OK Pre-K one day, and started working on his homework with his mother, Alisha. She noticed that Zayde, who showed left-handed tendencies since birth and had always written with his left hand before, was now struggling to use his right hand. When Alisha asked Zayde why he was using his right hand, Zayde told her that his teacher (who one would assume to be a relatively intelligent professional educator), told him that his left hand was ‘bad.’
Alisha immediately fired off a letter to the teacher regarding the teacher’s treatment of her young son. The teacher responded with a communication of her own, which included the following:
“Most children and adults do develop a hand dominance. Right-handedness is more common (70-90%) than left-handedness. In many western cultures, right-handedness was/is considered the ‘correct’ or ‘right’ hand to use, and left-handedness was unlucky, inauspicious or frankly evil. The word ‘sinister,’ meaning left-sided, derives from various sources as early as the 15th century. There are numerous instances of left-handedness being associated with wickedness. For example, the devil is often portrayed as left-handed, and people throw salt over their left shoulder to ward off evil spirits that dwell there.”
I’ll give you all a second to pick your jaws up off the floor.
Sands complained to the local Superintendent of Schools, but no action has been taken against the teacher in question. She continues to teach, and Sands has removed her son from the classroom, for now. She took her complaint to the Oklahoma Board of Education, who released the following statement:
“It is deeply disturbing if the allegations are accurate,” the statement reads. “No young child should be made to feel shame because of the hand he or she favors.”
This smacks of Kim Davis (Rowan County, Kentucky court clerk of no marriage licenses for gays fame). These people want to not only have their own beliefs, but they want to foist them on everyone around them. But call them on it and they immediately become martyrs.
Just do your job, damnit.
