Conservatives fear it, Fox News hates it, but nobody in the right-wing seems to know what the word actually means. Pin the Social-Nazi-Commieism on the Democratic President is a popular past time for the right-wing, and anyone debating a right-winger knows Humpty Dumpty’s famous quote from Alice in Wonderland, even if they’ve never read the book:
‘And only one for birthday presents, you know. There’s glory for you!’
‘I don’t know what you mean by “glory”,’ Alice said.
Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. ‘Of course you don’t — till I tell you. I meant “there’s a nice knock-down argument for you!”‘
‘But “glory” doesn’t mean “a nice knock-down argument”,’ Alice objected.
‘When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’
But this sort of militant ignorance from the right-wing blinds them. You see, the United States is already a socialist country. In a new video posted to AJ media, Francesca Fiorentini enumerates five ways the “scariest word in American politics” already walks among us.
As American as apple pie bought at a Walmart with food stamps.
At its core, socialism is the idea that the community should own the means and distribution of production. That’s it. But that single sentence has produced an amazing constellation of political philosophies.
So how is the United States already socialist?
In her video, Fiorentini goes over five ways that the United States has already taken the plunge into being a socialist country. For instance, the weekend is socialist; and while many people may not have a normal five-day work week anymore, this is a result of American moving away from socialism, not towards it.
The Fair Labor and Standards Act, which sat a 40 hour work week and banned child labor, among other things, is an important piece of socialist legislation. The New Deal is another extraordinary example of socialist legislation in the United States; the New Deal was so successful that it gave us infrastructure that even today, with our blatant disregard towards it, still works.
Spending on the military, which is well above $500 billion, qualifies as socialism, as does all the tax breaks for the wealthy — so much so that canny observers note the Republicans aren’t against socialism, they’re against socialism for the poor.
There are other ways that the country is socialist as well, but these are the most obvious. And yet, despite being the most obvious, they’re the biggest ones that the right-wing overlooks — they have to, after all. Acknowledging that socialism is already here would mean having to acknowledge that socialism works.
And God forbid that happen.
