Rick Santorum Ignores First Amendment, Says ‘Yes We Can’ Put Bibles Back In Public Schools (VIDEO)

The lunacy from the Liberty Counsel’s Awakening conference from this past weekend continues to come at sane people in waves of scary soundbites and videos of the most extreme ideas from far right religious nuts. The latest ridiculous statement comes from potential GOP 2016 hopeful Rick Santorum, who rallied the audience of right wing crackpots with the idea of turning history back to the 1950s and ignoring the First Amendment by suggesting that they all fight to have Bibles put back in public schools. Santorum warned, as so many of his ilk have been lately, that America is doomed if its citizens do not turn back to God. By “God,” of course, he means the hateful, judgmental, far right nujob version. Santorum told his listeners:

We are on a crossroads in American history, a crossroads that looks like we are heading down in a direction that, let’s be honest, no civilization has ever been able to recover from.

The left cannot be successful in a country of God-given rights,” he said. “It can’t. Because they want to be the purveyor of rights, and if God is the purveyor of rights, then they lose. We have an obligation to educate, to form, within our churches to preach, within our families to educate, and to fight within our schools. Why are Bibles no longer in public schools? Don’t give me the Supreme Court. The reason Bibles are no longer in the public schools is because we let them take them out of the public schools.

No, Mr. Santorum, Bibles are not in public schools because we are not a Christian nation, no matter how much you and and your fellow religious zealots on the right might wish we we were. We are a nation of many religions, and the First Amendment guarantees religious liberty to all, not just to conservative Christians like yourself. You do not have the right to force your rabidly hateful and intolerant brand of Jesus Juice down the throats of any children but your own, and you certainly cannot force the government to do it via the public school system. It really is as simple as that. The public school system is an arm of the government, and therefore your proselytizing is not welcome there. Don’t like it? Send your children to a private Christian school to be educated.

It really is about the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, which is quite clear on the matter, as it says:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

So, in other words, you lose, Rick Santorum. You don’t have a legal leg to stand on. I’m sure that won’t stop you from trying to break the law and rally your pastors, snake handlers, and fellow fear- mongering activists to go full steam ahead and break the law anyway.

As if his insane idea wasn’t bad enough, Santorum, at the end of his speech actually had the nerve to rip off President Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan, going:

You say, ‘Well we can’t get them back in.’ Yes we can. Yes we can!
