Way back when Nixon was president, he allowed Christian Scientists to insert language into a bill drafted to protect child welfare (the CAPTA) that exempted parents from their own actions if they believed “prayer is the only way to cure illness,” even when that action caused the child’s death.
To make that real, Mariah, a 20-year-old who is going to need a heart and lung transplant, and whose life has been shortened, painfully, due to medical neglect, will probably never see justice because her parents are fundamentalist Mormon whackjobs and Idaho law protects them.
Here is a picture of her, hold this in your mind:
Mariah’s Words, courtesy of the Guadian:
Mariah Walton’s voice is quiet – her lungs have been wrecked by her illness, and her respirator doesn’t help. But her tone is resolute.
“Yes, I would like to see my parents prosecuted.”
“They deserve it.” She pauses. “And it might stop others.”
When she was a tiny baby, Mariah had a small hole in her heart, a congenital defect. This is a pretty common defect, actually, I have known a few babies that had surgery to repair theirs and they became rambunctious, active kids and teens. Mariah, however, was given a strong prescription of prayer and alternative medicine by her moronic Mormon parents. She has had to have oxygen equipment screwed into her bones several times. Oh, yeah, and she is going to need a heart and lung transplant to keep her life. After that, she will have to endure the pain and anti-rejection drugs required by a transplant, but until then, she will have to suffer the pain and restrictions of her disease.
Oh, I forgot to mention this, if she had been in Oregon across an arbitrary border between states, her parents would have been arrested, thrown in jail, and charged with medical neglect. However, in Idaho (what the f*ck is wrong with you, Idaho?!?) religious parents can literally just allow their children to die, as long as they are praying while they watch them suffer.
Yes, her parents deserve to be charged, and rot in jail — they can pray for release the same as they preyed on Mariah.
Her parents have literally killed her, not immediately but slowly and painfully. They have stolen not only her childhood but also her adulthood because their God doesn’t give a sh*t if children die — just that their parents are faithful in keeping them away from the evils of modern medicine; like living a long, healthy, life. They see this as a test of faith by God, who apparently wanted them to deliver this helpless child into a life of pain.
When she finally escaped the fundamentalist sect she lived with at 18, she had no social security number or birth certificate. Mariah wants her parents charged but they will never be charged in the state of Idaho with the way things stand. The fact is that as a result of the laws protecting SOME religious people from their own negligence (can you imagine if Mariah was Muslim?), at least one group of these wackadoodles has a child mortality rate 10 percent higher than the state average.
Yet these people argue that their right to religious freedom trumps their responsibility to care for a life they brought into being. These people literally let their children die to please their God, and our laws do nothing to stop it.
