Country star Zac Brown didn’t have a very good night last Thursday. Brown was in Palm Beach, Florida, for a charity auction when he went to a party at the Four Seasons hotel. That party allegedly featured strippers, marijuana and cocaine. While Brown was there, the gathering was raided by police.
The incident started when police were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle, according to Fox411. When officers approached the man who was sitting in the vehicle he told them that he was with two women who were in the hotel. A search of the car turned up 35 small baggies that were filled with cocaine. The man was placed under arrest and the officers went inside the hotel to investigate. When they did so, they found a party involving nine people, one of them allegedly Brown. One man was arrested for possession of marijuana, and the two women were arrested for possession of cocaine.
Radar Online posted a police “event report” that lists Brown as one of the men at the party, and the birthdate on the report matches Brown’s. But according to TMZ, Palm Beach police claimed that Brown was not present. Sources told TMZ that the cops recognized Brown and even asked for his autograph. They later reportedly made fun of one of the women they arrested because she didn’t know who Brown was.
Brown admitted what the Palm Beach police wouldn’t, with this post on his official website:
My dad always said nothing good ever happens when you stay out late. It’s a lesson I learned the hard way last week, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I attended a private gathering at a Miami-area hotel and had only been there for a short time when police officers arrived and arrested two people in the room who had just showed up a few minutes before. I did not know these people and had no idea that there were drugs in their possession. I cooperated fully with the authorities and am not part of any ongoing police investigation. Everyone is responsible for their actions, and I regret using poor judgment and putting myself in that position.
I am focused on continuing to make great music for my fans, and on representing my family and community well with our philanthropic work.
And next time I’ll make sure to remember what my dad taught me.
There are a bunch of unanswered questions in all of this, such as “who hosted the party, and what was his or her relationship to Brown?” Brown’s statement doesn’t address that, and since the police decided to attempt to cover up the entire thing, there are no answers to be had from them either. There were nine people in the room, according to reports. Two of them were strippers, another was the man who was arrested for marijuana. Brown says he didn’t know them, but who did he know?
This would all be best saved for celebrity gossip sites like TMZ, except for one important detail — Brown is a supporter of the Republican party who backed Mitt Romney in 2012 and who played at that year’s GOP convention. He’s also married and has five children. And he somehow wound up at a party in the middle of the night with a bunch of people he claims he didn’t know, then says he was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.” It must have been the right place when he arrived, since nobody is suggesting that he was brought there against his will. It appears that only the presence of the police turned this into the “wrong place at the wrong time.”
