Michelle Obama turns 52 on January 17, her next-to-last birthday as FLOTUS. Over the years since her husband became president, the First Lady’s detractors have criticized her for a variety of things. From photoshopping pictures to make her look fat, and calling her “Moochelle,” to criticizing her push to get school cafeterias to serve our children healthier choices for lunch, and even claiming that she is actually a man, the right has had a field day making fun of Mrs. Obama.
But her detractors simply can’t stand the idea that Michelle Obama is one of the most articulate and intelligent presidential wives in recent history. And she has a killer sense of grace and style. So let’s celebrate her 52nd birthday by thinking back on some of the most awesome moments during her time as first lady.
Most recently, she teamed with SNL’s Jay Pharoah to do a music video encouraging high school students to pursue a college education.
She started an initiative called “Let’s Move!” to get kids away from their computers and video games, and outside to play, in an effort to combat childhood obesity. She has tirelessly promoted this effort, as this video from 2011 shows.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8i9AEa72GU?rel=0]
She’s also not afraid to have some fun with it, as seen in this appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.”[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qWuOtP9eZE?rel=0]
Then there was last summer, when she and the president hosted the first ever girl scout campout on the White House lawn.
And the time when she spoke at the Tuskegee University commencement, and told graduates to “rise” above the hate and insults that may come their way.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhUKwl5NFgE?rel=0]
There are many more examples; too many to include in a brief post. Even though some won’t recognize or acknowledge it, America got a great “two for one” deal with Barack and Michelle Obama.
Happy birthday FLOTUS!
