Fox News Promotes ‘Smoking Gun’ Email That Proves They Are Wrong About Benghazi (VIDEO)

The Fox News malady OCBD (Obsessive Compulsive Benghazi Disorder) apparently has only one cure — the 2016 election. After November 8, 2016, it is widely believed the malady will miraculously vanish. But until that time, the “fair and balanced” fairly unbalanced network will continue to promote all the Benghazi conspiracy theories, including ones that prove their nonsense to be, for want of a better word, nonsense.

A new email has been released that has gotten Fox host Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Fox flunky Andrew Napolitano all worked up. Never mind that the email further confirms that one of the biggest right-wing talking points — the supposed “stand down order” — is totally false. In the upside down world of Fox “logic,” this email shows, according to Hasselbeck, that “the only thing standing between the terrorists who overran the compound and the four Americans who lost their lives was a green light from the State Department.” Actually, it proves that everything the Obama administration has said about the availability of military assets during the attack is accurate.

Hasselbeck and Napolitano talked about the email on the December 10 “Fox and Friends,” where the former judge had this to say:

This is huge. And it’s extremely troublesome for the Obama administration today and for Mrs. Clinton and her tenure as the secretary of state, because the Obama administration and Mrs. Clinton, when she was secretary of state and since she left, had been arguing and arguing consistently that there was no notice and no opportunity for military personnel to support and defend the consulate. Now, remember, there are three attacks. After the first attack is when this email is sent. There’s a five-hour gap between the first attack and the second and third. The third follows the second.

Napolitano, Hasselbeck, and a plethora of right-wing sites have all been trumpeting a redacted version of the email, obtained via a freedom of information request from the conservative group Judicial Watch. The email was sent by the Defense Department’s Chief Of Staff Jeremy Bash. The redacted version of that email reads as follows:

I just tried you on the phone but you were all in with (Secretary Clinton).

After consulting with General Dempsey, General Ham and the Joint Staff, we have identified the forces that could move to Benghazi. They are spinning up as we speak. They include a (REDACTED).

Assuming Principals agree to deploy these elements, we will ask State to procure the approval from host nation. Please advise how you wish to convey that approval to us (REDACTED).

Despite the fact that Fox News reported in 2014 that no stand down order was given, the bits that were left out of the redacted email were enough to produce the claim of smoking gun. But Fox apparently was not counting on the top Democrat on the Benghazi committee, Elijah Cummings, releasing the unredacted email, which proves that then Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta was being truthful when he told congress that no military assets could have reached Benghazi in time. The forces that were identified as “spinning up” in the email were in Croatia and Spain, each close to 1,000 miles away.

Fox News is shocked, shocked that mainstream media outlets have not covered this story. Media Matters captured the graphic below from Fox:

Of course no mainstream media outlets are covering this story. To quote a former president, “there is no ‘there’ there.” But, because of their obsessive compulsive desire to bring down the candidacy of Hillary Clinton, we have about 11 more months of this nonsense to come.

Here’s the video of Hasselbeck and Napolitano, hyping an email that proves them wrong, via Media Matters:

Genius move getting rid of Ghadaffi.

    • LostSok

What are you prattling on about? There was an uprising. The UN, NATO and Qatar supported this uprising. Ghadaffi had hundreds of protested killed (in Benghazi). The ICC issues charges against Ghadaddi. He was going down, no matter what; we just assisted (as part of NATO).

Neither Hillary nor Obama flipped a switch in Libya. Where do you get your news??? Sheesh.

      • Otto Greif

        You’re clueless.

        • LostSok

Have you really looked at any of this, or do you just regurgitate gibberish you hear on the radio?

Ah. No. I see it. You’re still so butthurt because Bush made among the biggest blunders in the history of world politics in intentionally invading the wrong country because he had a hard-on for Saddam…and now you want to paint Obama/Clinton with that same brush. Hilarious!

So you DO know that Libya was out of control, that Ghadaffi was committing war crimes left and right, that the whole show was coming down, that we were just part of the NATO response…you ARE aware of that, aren’t you? You’re just intentionally lying thinking other people don’t know.

Seriously: how do you look in the mirror without vomiting?

          • Otto Greif

NATO does nothing without US approval. LIbya wasn’t “out of control”, the rebels were losing.

          • Otto Greif

Who said it? ” The United States helped shape a U.N. Security Council resolution that mandated the protection of Libyan civilians. An unprecedented coalition was formed that included the United States, our NATO partners and Arab nations. And in March, the international community launched a military operation to save lives and stop Qaddafi’s forces in their tracks.

In the early days of this intervention, the United States provided the bulk of the fire power, and then our friends and allies stepped forward.”

Feb. 22, 2011 – John McCain and Joe Lieberman: “The horrific situation in Libya demands more than just public condemnation; it requires strong international action. … Some Libyan diplomats have bravely called for a no-fly zone to stop the Qaddafi regime’s use of airpower to attack Libyan civilians. We support this course of action.”

Feb. 24, 2011 – Marco Rubio: “We should immediately engage willing partners to limit the regime’s ability to wage war against its own citizens. These measures could include (but are not limited to) pressing bordering nations to stop the flow of mercenaries into Libya, finding ways to restore severed communications, imposing a no-fly zone to protect civilians against aircraft attacks, and mobilizing a humanitarian relief effort.”

Feb. 24, 2011– Mike Huckabee: “I think I’d make it very clear that the United States is not going to stand by and watch a country slaughter its own people in cold blood, that there is a sense in which there’s a virtual genocide going on. … I think a no-fly zone would be absolute – yeah a no fly zone very important because that way you keep him from flying mercenaries in, maybe even a naval armada somewhere off the 3 mile international boundaries, just as a presence, and even to say we stand ready to do what is necessary to make sure there’s not an act of genocide against those people.”

Feb. 28, 2011 – Lindsay Graham: “What I would suggest is that we really keep implementing U.N. sanctions on the economic side, on the travel side, go after assets. And a no fly zone would make a lot of sense to me.”

Feb. 28, 2011 – Susan Collins: “I do believe our allies may be able to join together with us to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya to help protect the people from Gadhafi,” she said. “Any actions that we take I believe should be in concert with our allies.”

March 1, 2011 – By unanimous consent, the Senate adopts a resolution urging the UN Security council to take “further action to protect civilians in Libya from attack, including the possible imposition of a no-fly zone over Libyan territory.”

March 7, 2011 – Newt Gingrich: “Exercise a no-fly zone this evening, communicate to the Libyan military that Gadhafi was gone … All we have to say is that we think that slaughtering your own citizens is unacceptable and that we’re intervening. And we don’t have to send troops. All we have to do is suppress his air force…”

March 13, 2011 – John McCain: “First, the president [Barack Obama] should recognize Libya’s transitional national council, which is based in Benghazi but representative of communities across the country, as the sole legitimate governing authority of Libya, just as France has done. Second, the president should take immediate steps to implement a no-fly zone in Libya with international support.”

March 31, 2011 – Marco Rubio, to Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid: “I am writing to seek your support for bringing a bi-partisan resolution to the Senate floor authorizing the President’s decision to participate in allied military action in Libya. Furthermore, this resolution should also state that removing Muammar Qaddafi from power is in our national interest and therefore should authorize the President to accomplish this goal. To that end, the resolution should urge the President to immediately recognize the Interim Transitional National Council as the legitimate government in Libya.’

Feb. 23, 2011 – France– The Guardian: “Nicolas Sarkozy is leading the calls for a NATO-imposed no-fly zone to be enforced over Libya to ‘prevent the use of that country’s warplanes against [its] population.’ Sarkozy, the current president of the G8 and G20 economic forums, has also called for the European Union to impose sanctions against Libya and suggested that the assets of the family of the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, should be frozen.”

Feb. 27, 2011 – Italy– Associated Press: “Italy has effectively suspended a treaty with Libya that includes a nonaggression clause, amid turmoil in the North African nation, the foreign minister said Sunday. The suspension removes a possible obstacle to Rome taking part in any peacekeeping operations in its former colony, or allowing the use of its military bases.”

Feb 28, 2011 – Britain– PM David Cameron: We must not tolerate this regime using military force against its own people. In that context I have asked the Ministry of Defence and the Chief of the Defence Staff to work with our allies on plans for a military no-fly zone. Mr Speaker, it is clear that this is an illegitimate regime that has lost the consent of its people. My message to Colonel Qadhafi is simple: Go now.”

March 10, 2011 – Libyan Rebels – CNN: The head of the interim government in eastern Libya pleaded Wednesday for the international community to move quickly to impose a no-fly zone over Libya, declaring that any delay would result in more casualties. ‘It has to be immediate action,’ Mustafa Abdul-Jalil told CNN in an exclusive interview in this eastern opposition stronghold. ‘The longer the situation carries on, the more blood is shed. That’s the message that we want to send to the international community. They have to live up to their responsibility with regards to this.’”

March 12, 2011 – Arab States – New York Times: “The Arab League asked the United Nations Security Council on Saturday to impose a no-flight zone over Libya in hopes of halting Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s attacks on his own people, providing the rebels a tincture of hope even as they were driven back from a long stretch of road and towns they had captured in the three-week war. The extraordinary move by the 22-nation bloc — an extremely rare invitation for Western military forces on Arab territory — increases the pressure on the Obama administration…”

March 11, 2011 – John Kerry: “Perhaps the mere threat of a no-fly zone will keep Gaddafi’s pilots from using their helicopters and fighter jets to kill their own people. If it does not, we should be crystal-clear that we will lead the free world to avoid the senseless slaughter of any more Libyan citizens by a mad man bent on maintaining power. We should also make clear that the United States - just as we did in Bosnia and Kosovo - is taking a stand against a thug who is killing Muslims.”

March 23, 2011 – Nancy Pelosi: “Acting upon the United Nations Security Council’s resolution to use ‘all measures necessary’ to protect the Libyan people and the Arab League’s call for a no-fly-zone, the United States joined the international community in preventing an imminent humanitarian crisis in Libya. Actions taken by the international community have already prevented Qaddafi from implementing his threat to ‘show no mercy’ to his own people, including those living in the city of Benghazi.”

March 28, 2011 – Barbara Boxer: President Obama reminded the country tonight of why it was critical for the international community to take action to prevent the mass slaughter of innocent men, women and children by Moammar Gaddafi’s forces. I am pleased that NATO is now assuming control of the mission, and it is important that partners in the Arab League, including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, continue to play an active role in enforcing the no-fly zone and ensuring the protection of the Libyan people.

Bad for Fox, what about the false claim that this was not an organized terror attack for days after even though Hillary testified that it was an organized attack when it occurred. Not defending Fox, but this does not clear up the Democrats cover up weeks before an election.

    • Bill Haffey

Just to remind you of the TRUTH the President called this act terrorism on the night it happened. Something Mitt was reminded of during the debates when the moderator fact checked his comment correcting his false comment which you have repeated.

    • John M

First, yes he did call it an act of terror. There was not cover up. There were multiple things going on at the same time. Peopler were protesting the film and, at the same time, another group decided that would be a good time to attack the outpost. You’ve got to remember something that Fox (and conservatives) always forget, what would have happened if they sent the limited forces they had to Benghazi and then then the main embassy got attacked? What would the reaction have been if a dozen people were killed because of that? They did exactly what you’re supposed to do in that situation, leave your forces where they are and wait for re-enforcments to arrive. No matter what happened in Benghazi, as long as there was even 1 death, Fox and the GOP would still be talking about it. There would still have been 7 investigations. And the results would still be the same. Nobody did anything wrong.

  • Bill Manus

Have to remember, faux news was made for the conservative minded, facts aren’t necessary.

  • Trey Walker

1000 miles is just a couple of hours away for a strike force to arrive. This piece ignores this FACT!

  • LostSok

Hillary made a dumb comment, but the UN Security Council, Nato, US allies such as David Cameron and Nicolas Sarkozy, and many senior Republicans supported military intervention in Libya. Again…this was NOT a decision Hillary made and it happened. You can cherry pick all you want, but had Mitt or McClain been president they EASILY would have made the same decisions. Unless your daft you clearly know that. Of course, Bush would not have made that decision. He would probably have invaded Norway or something…

    • Otto Greif

Was she lying or confused in that clip, or both? That idiot neocons also supported intervening isn’t a plus. It’s not “cherry picking”, Hillary and Obama’s arrogant and poorly thought out choice to topple Ghadaffi was a mistake.

  • John Karlen

Rice was on the news channels the following Sunday saying it was caused by a video. Are you saying she was a lone wolf? SHEEEEEEEEEESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Screaming Green Man

This snippet leaves out the timeline. 7pm is when forces were ready to go from Croatia. 5am was the mortar attack. 10 hours. The real question is why you wouldn’t send forces at all, with the situation so fluid. The only reason would be that they DID NOT want American forces engaging, killing, and/or capturing any of the attackers. That is the real question.
