This Florida sheriff is pissed off after having one of his tanks removed from department and of course, it’s all Obama’s fault.
President Obama recently banned certain military equipment from being sold to police departments in response to public criticism after the Ferguson riots:
We’ve seen how militarized gear can sometimes give people a feeling like they’re an occupying force, as opposed to a force that’s part of the community that’s protecting them and serving them,’ Obama said in a speech in Camden, N.J. Monday. He said military equipment can ‘alienate and intimidate local residents and may send the wrong message.
Obama stands by his decision and has recently removed certain military tanks from local police departments — which prompted this response from Volusia Sheriff Ben Johnson when his M113 was taken away.
People will die because of this decision.
I don’t recall Florida being declared a war zone. Sheriff Johnson claims his officers would be going on suicide missions without these massive — totally unnecessary tanks.
The department was not left bare handed. President Obama still left the MRAP, which Johnson states is similar — just missing the treading. Johnson’s claim that the President doesn’t care about law enforcement is ridiculous.
Look, while I want to go to bed feeling protected, there’s no reason for local police officers to have military weapons and armored vehicles that are built for battlefields, when they haven’t had proper military training. Volusia County isn’t Bagdad, the county is home to the safest cities in the state. So, what the hell is he talking about?
Besides, with all of the police brutailty lately, it begs the question: If we can’t trust them with guns, why should we trust them with tanks?
