In February, Hummelstown Borough Police Officer Lisa Mearkle pulled over David Kassick in Pennsylvania for having an expired inspection sticker. A short time later he was dead and a month later she was charged with homicide. Unfortunately, she will never be forced to pay for her crime as a jury acquitted her of the callous murder and she is blaming her charges on politics.
According to reports, after Kassick was pulled over, he got out of the car and ran to his sister’s house. Mearkle chased him and the video begins with her screaming at him to get on the ground. She fired her taser at him and hits him in the back and he complies with the officer’s orders. As Kassick laid on the ground writhing in pain, Mearkle shot him in the face twice.
District Attorney Ed Marisco wrote in an affidavit:
At the time Officer Mearkle fires both rounds from her pistol, the video clearly depicts Kassick lying on the snow covered lawn with his face toward the ground, furthermore, at the time the rounds are fired nothing can be seen in either of Kassick’s hands, nor does he point or direct anything toward Officer Mearkle.
Mearkle, however, doesn’t believe she did anything wrong. Instead of taking responsibility for her actions, she blamed her arrest on politics:
I’m a good police officer. This [arrest] should not have happened to me. I believe I could continue to be a police officer. I was only charged for political reasons. That’s how I feel.
She can feel however she wants and I’m sure the badge-lickers’ support has encouraged her delusion, but her charges had nothing to do with politics — she was charged because she murdered a man. For far too long police officers have held the notion that they are above the very laws that they are sworn to uphold, this is ridiculous. “Reasonable force” is not a gun every single time. She could have tased him again, the prongs were already in his back; instead, she chose to shoot him in the face….TWICE. Just because she was found innocent, doesn’t make her so. Casey Anthony, George Zimmerman and OJ Simpson were all acquitted too.
