Joy Diaz, an Austin reporter with KUT, was waiting outside the police union building getting ready for an interview (in an unrelated story) with the head of the union, when all of a sudden a veteran officer of the force approached her. He had a few words to say about the recent media coverage and video tape release of NFL running back Ray Rice punching and knocking out his ex-fiance in a hotel elevator.
Officer Andrew Pietrowski, did not agree with the media’s portrayal of the incident:
Now, stop and think about this. I don’t care who you are. You think about the women’s movement today, [women say] ‘Oh, we want to go [into] combat,’ and then, ‘We want equal pay, and we want this.’ You want to go fight in combat and sit in a foxhole? You go right ahead, but a man can’t hit you in public here? Bulls–t! You act like a whore, you get treated like one!
It’s not entirely clear what caused Officer Pietrowski to go off on the reporter like that, but luckily she had her mic on. You can listen to the entire video at the bottom of the article.
Austin police are not having a jolly Christmas this year. Just last month, the force came under fire for other sexist comments by two officers who were recorded on their dash cam as saying:
Go ahead and call the cops. They can’t un-rape you.
After making these comments the officers can be heard laughing repeatedly, finding themselves to be rather funny. For this, the officers on duty at the time the statements were made, were only given three to five days suspension.
Jim Harrington, a civil rights attorney, thinks this treatment of women in Austin is part of an “old boys culture,” and while it has improved somewhat under the current Police Chief Art Acevedo, it hasn’t gone away.
You know? This issue of how women are treated by the police has been bothering me for a long time. I know women who do training [for the police], and they talk about the attitude of the officers sitting there in the classroom sort of snickering, rolling their eyes or making comments under their breath. So, I know this is an ongoing issue.
