People on the right love to blame the media, #BlackLivesMatter, and, of course, President Obama for violence against police officers. This helps them to avoid having to face the fact that minorities are much more likely to be shot by cops than are their white counterparts. It also lets them believe that there is no systemic racism. This happened again on Sunday, after the tragic shooting of police officers in an ambush attack in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Cleveland, Ohio detective and President of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association Steve Loomis went on Fox News to immediately lay the blame for the officers’ deaths at the feet of President Obama. Loomis began:
It’s absolutely insane that we have a president of the United States and a governor of Minnesota making the statements they made less than one day after the police-involved shootings. And those police-involved shootings, make no mistake, are what absolutely have triggered this rash of senseless murders of law enforcement officers across this country. It’s reprehensible. And the president of the United States has blood on his hands that will not be able to come washed off.
Of course, people like Loomis cannot understand that what President Obama and the governor of Minnesota have said is right. He doesn’t want to understand that there is bias in policing, and this unrest will continue until it is addressed. Until he and those who think like him admit to these issues, the killing will continue. Of course, Loomis had to end up by making the entire police profession into victims:
How the hell did we ever become the bad guys in this country? I cannot imagine how we got here. It’s the irresponsible reporting of the media.
And the irresponsible statements of people that are credible like the president of the United States.
It’s thinking like that that is the problem. Everyone involved in #BlackLivesMatter, as well as the president and others who acknowledge the problem with racist policing, has called for an end to all violence. Violence is never justifiable, ever. President Obama has said so, repeatedly. So, Detective Loomis, do not lay this at the feet of anyone besides the people who are to blame: the shooters.
