Police in Houston, Texas shot an African American man they claim was acting “suspiciously” when he was pulled over on Saturday night. The Houston Police Department claims that Mike Walker, the passenger in the car, would not listen to their commands, even after officers shot him multiple times.
“At one point, he had his hand under the seat, like he was reaching for something, and ignoring the verbal commands repeatedly,” said Victor Senties with the Houston Police Department.
“They saw the doors open up, one of the officers gave repeated verbal commands to stay inside the vehicle, then the officer went to brace the door to keep [Walker] inside.” he explained, adding that Walker was able to get “out of the vehicle [and] he was digging into his pockets and waist band.”
“The suspect got out of his vehicle, walked around his vehicle and the patrol car, again ignoring verbal commands,” said Senties, saying the officer was afraid the man was reaching for a weapon.
One witness, Laquesha Spencer, says that she knew the man, and begged him to lie down for fear officers would finish him off.
“I’m telling (him) ‘Lay down, they are going to shoot you. They are going to kill you.’ And I guess he was in shock, he had already been shot three times, because I heard multiple gunshots,” she said.
In the video, other witnesses can be heard begging Walker to get on the ground before he ended up another statistic.
As Walker was stripping off his clothes, a second officer opened fire, hitting him a fourth time. “He also feared for his safety and once he was out of the area where people were around him, the officer discharged his weapon as well,” Senties said of the second officer.
Walker’s sister, Laura, says that officers used excessive force and is pursuing legal action. “He didn’t even have a gun,” she said, “he’s never owned a weapon.”
Walker was taken to the hospital after the shooting, where he is listed in stable, but serious, condition. The driver was taken into custody.
