On Monday, the British Parliament began debating about whether or not to ban Republican presidential front-runner, Donald Trump, from entering the United Kingdom and the lawmakers absolutely pummeled him.
The debate was triggered after more than half a million people signed an online petition to ban Trump after the comments he made about Muslims in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks. After the horrific act of terrorism by DAESH (ISIS/ISIL) the presidential candidate said that he would ban all Muslims if he were elected president. This statement caused the a tremendous amount of backlash, including the online petition.
During the debate in the Parliament, lawmakers overwhelmingly condemned Trump for his bigotry. Paul Flynn, a member of Parliament from the center-left Labour Party, was designated to argue on the behalf of the petitioners. Flynn said that although he agrees that Trump’s comments are “outrageous” he doesn’t want to make him a martyr:
The last thing we want to do is assist him by awarding him a garland of victimhood. A ban is not going to achieve anything. It would be far better to test his claims.
Some of the other PMs were not so polite. PM Gavin Newlands repeatedly called Trump an “idiot”. Tulip Siddiq, a Labour member from north London, said that she agrees with banning the candidate because she “draws the line at freedom of speech when it imports a violent ideology.” Jack Dromey, Labour’s spokesman on home affairs, said that allowing the imbecile to enter the U.K. would be “damaging” and “deeply divisive.” Dromey mirrored President Obama saying that Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric helps DAESH:
ISIS needs Donald Trump and Donald Trump needs ISIS.
Sarah Malone, executive vice-president of Trump International Golf Links, responded to the debate, saying:
It is absurd that valuable parliamentary time is being wasted debating a matter raised as part of the American Presidential election. For the UK to consider banning someone who made a statement in America, about American boarders [sic] during a US election campaign is ridiculous.
In all likelihood, the most vile loudmouth in America probably will not be banned from the U.K., but the fact that a debate about it even took place in the government of our closest ally speaks volumes. This guy is running for the most powerful job in the world and instead of carrying himself in a way that proudly represents the United States, he continues to spew bombastic nonsense in an attempt to keep the racist, bigoted, low-information voters of the Republican base enthralled. It’s disgraceful.
