Anyone who knows anything about Bill Maher knows that he’s not a fan of religion. He’s pretty much an equal opportunity religion skeptic, except for one. He, like so many Republicans, is absolutely terrified of Muslims.
On Friday’s Real Time, Maher and guests Mark Cuban and Chris Matthews discussed Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old boy who was arrested for making a clock for a science project. The school claims they thought it was a bomb (more on that in a bit). Of course, it wasn’t a bomb, but Maher took to his show to defend the actions of the school and the police department, who showed nothing but pure ignorance and Islamophobia.
The clock was not a bomb and the school wasn’t erring on the side of caution, as Maher contended. The police chief admitted that they knew that it wasn’t a bomb when the boy was arrested. The bomb squad did not come. School wasn’t evacuated. It was clear that the school knew it wasn’t in danger and if they felt they were, they handled it in a way that could have endangered an entire school full of kids. In an age of litigiousness, there is no way they would have risked that.
Bill’s reaction was just as ignorant as the police arresting this kid.
