A middle school teacher in Mobile, Alabama is in hot water after giving her language arts students a shockingly racist test. The test is one that has been circulating for some twenty years, and has gotten several teachers in trouble over that time period. Now in “post-racial” America, it appears to be making the rounds again.
The ten question quiz is supposed to be a math test, and uses racial stereotypes and illegal activities as the basis for items such as this:
Tyrone knocked up 4 girls in the gang. There are 20 girls in his gang. What is the exact percentage of girls Tyrone knocked up?
According to a report from WALA, the students were shocked when their language arts teacher passed out the test. One parent said the kids thought it was a joke. “They took it as a joke, and she told them that it wasn’t it a joke, and they had to complete it, and turn it in,” parent Erica Hall said.
Here is the complete test, as shared by one parent:
The main question that comes to mind about the incident is why would a language arts teacher give her students a math test? Apparently the teacher, who has worked at the school for some time, is retiring at the end of the school year, and this looks like it could be a subtle upraised middle finger at her students. It’s also possible that in her sheltered, white-privileged world, this teacher may actually believe that the situations described on this test are something that her black students are all familiar with. But that explanation still begs the question of why a math test would be handed out in a language arts class.
And what do right-wing outlets have to say about this? Newsmax says that the test merely uses “real urban street life examples.” Because you know that America is a “post-racial” society now. Didn’t your crazy uncle tell you?
