Yet another Federal Court ruling paves the way for marriage equality, as U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess strikes down Alaska’s gay marriage ban as unconstitutional.
“The court finds that Alaska’s ban on same-sex marriage and refusal to recognize same-sex marriages lawfully entered in other states is unconstitutional as a deprivation of basic due process and equal protection principles under the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”
Anti-gay Alaska governor to appeal gay marriage ruling.
While marriage equality supporters were out celebrating, those anti-gay, right-wing party poopers in Sarah Palin’s state are already gearing up for an appeal. Alaska’s GOP Governor Sean Parnell declares in a press release:
“As Alaska’s governor, I have a duty to defend and uphold the law and the Alaska Constitution. Although the district court today may have been bound by the recent Ninth Circuit panel opinion, the status of that opinion and the law in general in this area is in flux. I will defend our constitution.”
Meanwhile, the state has already begun accepting gay couple’s applications for marriage licenses, starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, says this makes Alaska the 30th state in the U.S. where same sex couples can legally marry.
