When I look at pictures of the face of the racist mass murderer Dylann Roof, I see hate; I see evil and I barely believe in evil; I see a young man who believes that because he is white, he is more deserving; I see a product of gun culture; I see a terrorist, but one who is too much of a coward to take his own life; I see a monster.

Mark Pitcavage, the director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League (in other words, an expert) says that he sees white supremacist patches.

Pitcavage said a patch with orange, white and blue stripes on the upper right side of Roof’s jacket is the flag of South Africa’s Apartheid government. The patch below it is the flag of the former white-controlled country of Rhodesia, which later became Zimbabwe, he added.

Regardless of motives, Roof walked into a church, one attended by African-American people, and he pulled out a gun and killed nine people. By all accounts, it’s understandable if all Americans, especially African-Americans, would hate this man.

There’s no excuse for his actions. No one should care if he’s mentally ill. He’s a product of gun culture and hate. At least one man, though, is willing to overlook that. Marcus Stanley is a Christian — the type that embraces love and forgiveness. Despite being African-American and despite being a victim of gun violence himself, Stanley posted the one post that is visible on Dylann Roof’s Facebook page. It is a message of forgiveness.

Stanley’s own Facebook page gives us more insight. In 2004, he was shot eight times by gang members. He found Christianity in 2010 and he learned to forgive the man who shot him, despite the fact that he lost use of his right arm.

You might not agree with Stanley’s views, but you have to admit that he does Christianity right.
