Donald Trump is a racist. That is pretty much an indisputable fact at this point. He’s so racist, in fact, that he even has the backing the likes of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. The thing is, though, the GOP types who still support him can’t stand it when you point out the fact that they are backing a racist for the White House. Case in point – former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.
Brewer appeared on CNN on Sunday morning along with former Democratic presidential nominee Martin O’Malley. A contentious conversation began when the dialogue turned to President Obama’s remarks on Trump during a speech at a fundraiser for Washington Gov. Jay Inslee. Obama opined:
We don’t have time for charlatans and we don’t have time for hatred and we don’t have time for bigotry and we don’t have time for film-flam,” the president said. “And we don’t have the luxury of just popping off and saying just whatever comes to the top of our heads. Don’t have time for that.
Brewer wasn’t too thrilled with what the president had to say, and let loose during the discussion:
Obama just always comes tearing after Republicans constantly, calling names and calling people bigots and racists. And that’s their big comeback, you know. And it’s absolutely ridiculous. To see a president speak like that is offensive.
At that point, Gov. O’Malley chimed in and pointed out that Obama was not speaking of “all republicans” with his remarks, only clearly racist Trump. O’Malley continued:
But he did say it rightly that Donald Trump is a bigot, Donald Trump is a racist. Donald Trump is, in fact, making fascist appeals. That’s why many self-respecting Republicans are not supporting Donald Trump.
Brewer, however seems to think that “policy” should be discussed and that we should all just be ignoring Trump’s racism:
We need to discuss policy. With President Obama and Hillary Clinton, every time you disagree with them, it doesn’t matter which subject it is, you’re a bigot or you’re a racist!
While Brewer was clearly losing it, O’Malley calmly responded, “No, that’s not true.”
Brewer plowed on, though, continuing to blame President Obama for Donald Trump’s racism, saying:
But dang it. I get fed up that we hear over and over and over and over again from the president of the United States that every time somebody wants to support on the Constitution and the rule of law that we are out there because we are racist and bigots.
O’Malley then pointed out Trump’s racist attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is presiding over the Trump University lawsuit. He appealed to what might be left of Brewer’s common sense, saying:
Surely, Governor, you can’t agree that is proper behavior for a man who’s running for president.
But that didn’t work, either. Brewer continued to defend Trump, until O’Malley finally gave up and laughed right in her face, saying, “I can’t believe you’re supporting Donald Trump.”
This is about the most hilarious exchange ever, with a recently departed governor of an American state actually, point blank, defending blatant racism on national television. And Republicans wonder why everyone thinks their party is full of racists. Hint: because it is.
