A Staten Island Home Depot employee is receiving death threats from Republicans after wearing an anti-Trump hat to work.
Krystal Lake, 22, was photographed with a white baseball style cap on the had “America Was Never Great” scrawled across it. The hat mocks Republican Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan. According to Lake, she wore the cap to work because she lives in a town that is heavily Republican.
The point of the hat was to say America needs changing and improvement,” Lake told the Staten Island Advance. “I don’t think it’s a positive message to say, ‘Let’s look to the past.’
She is absolutely right, of course. For white Americans, like myself, the country has always been pretty good (well, white men, not so much for women like me but still not as bad as it was for black people). From the very being, the United States of America treated African-Americans like garbage; as a matter of fact, they were only considered three/fifths a person and they were enslaved. In the 1800s, after the Civil War (you know, the one that was fought to keep them enslaved) slavery was abolished and African-Americans were supposed to be given the same rights as us white folks — but they weren’t…for a hundred years.
It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Movement and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that black people actually began to be treated as Americans…well, sort of. Over the last fifty years, we have discriminated against Lake’s communities in all sorts of different ways: from the ghettoization of black neighborhoods to rampant police abuse to disproportionate incarceration rates.
For the African-American community, America has NEVER been great. The fact that right-wing America has not acknowledged that is one of the many, many reasons why the Republican Party is completely unable to convince their community to vote for them.
