While Republicans are finding new and inventive ways to hate gays, you won’t find many democrats that oppose gay marriage or gay rights–and that’s a good thing. However, it should be noted that democratic enthusiasm for same-sex marriage is a relatively recent development.
But even if many democrats have just recently seen the light on gay rights, Bernie Sanders was always for them. In fact, you might say that Bernie Sanders is the hipster candidate in that he was for gay rights before it was cool.
For example, Senator Sanders voted against both the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in 1993. But one watershed moment in Bernie’s congressional career came, oddly enough, during a 1995 congressional debate on the Clean Water Act. At any rate, then Congressman Bernie Sanders did what Bernie is best known to do: stand up against injustice and attacks on minority groups.
