Wow. If you thought Rep. Elijah Cummings’ opening statement for the Benghazi hearing was good, you’ll want to see this. The committee was calm and reserved this morning, but it seems Gowdy was getting cranky before lunch and it brought one hell of a throwdown between Rep. Elijah Cummings and Rep. Trey Gowdy.
The fiery exchange broke out between the two men wasn’t even about Hillary Clinton, but rather Sidney Blumenthal, who was not an employee of the State Department but is a close friend of Clinton’s who sometimes sent her emails while she was Secretary of State.
“You issued a subpoena to Blumenthal on May 19, 2015, compelling him to appear for a deposition on June 16, 2015,” Cummings said. “You issued that subpoena unilaterally without giving the select committee members the opportunity to debate or vote on it.” Cummings went on to say “Now, these facts directly contradict the statements you made on national television,” referring to Gowdy’s interview on Face The Nation last week
Gowdy got defensive claiming he wasn’t contradicting himself and that Blumenthal should be brought back in for questioning.
That’s when sh*t got real:
‘I move that we put into the record the entire transcript of Sidney Blumenthal. That way the world can see it,’ Cummings shouted.
‘Why is it you only want Blumenthal’s transcript released?’ Gowdy asked.
‘I’d like all of them released,’ Cummings shouted back. ‘The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. That’s what we want to have. Let the world see it.’
BOOM! Gowdy tried to drop that mic but in the end wound up looking like a sniveling little baby.
