One of the many indignities of being married to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is the fact that you are forced to join him in standing behind Donald Trump as the Republican front-runner goes on a vicious attack against women.
Following Trump’s sweep of the five state primaries on April 26, Trump used his time for his victory speech to take a break from attacking Ted Cruz and instead go after Hillary Clinton. As one might expect, the critiques were light on substance and all about attacking Clinton because of her gender.
He told the crowd:
The only card she has is the woman’s card. She’s got nothing else going on. And frankly, if Hillary Clinton were a man, I don’t think she’d get 5 percent of the vote. The only thing she’s got going is the women’s vote. And the beautiful thing is that women don’t like her.
Behind him stood poor Mary Pat Christie, who seemed to slowly melt into a puddle of shame and despair on live television. For a brief moment, she was all of us.

Reporters even noted that at one point she turned to her husband and rolled her eyes.
It’s hard to blame her. Trump’s comments were as baffling as they were disgusting. Clinton has a long history of political accomplishments under her belt. To say that she’s where she is today because of her gender is laughable. And despite Trump’s confidence in speaking for women, the polls consistently show that she wins women voters by wide margins over the Republican. In large part, this is due to the way Trump treats women. This speech didn’t help.
It seems entirely plausible that come election day, Mary Pat Christie will be casting her ballot for Hillary. If her facial expressions during this speech were any indication, there is no way she’s voting for Trump.
