Bill Maher is a self-proclaimed atheist. Last night on his show he touched on the fact that some public figures on the conservative side of the political spectrum have been drumming up an imaginary fear that Christianity is being persecuted–which he refutes with several statistics to the contrary. He says that:
- There are over 300,000 churches in the US, but only 400 Whole Foods
- 70% of Americans are Christian
- Every American President has been Christian
- 80% of Democrats in Congress are Christian
- 78% of Democratic Governors are Christian
In response to Bill O’Reilly claiming that “If you’re a Christian or a white man in the USA, it’s open season on you” Maher offers:
That explains all those recent videos of police shooting unarmed white clergyman.
Maher laments that the entire left is getting blamed for this imaginary war:
This idea that everybody on the left is plotting against Christianity and wants to wipe out religion is offensive… TO ME! Because I am the only media figure with a show week in and week out that says that. And I’ll be damned if the credit is going to go to the entire left when I’m the one doing all the heavy lifting.
The Smithsonian has an interesting article on religious freedom in America, chronicling the actual history and noting that, “The real story of religion in America’s past is an often awkward, frequently embarrassing and occasionally bloody tale that most civics books and high-school texts either paper over or shunt to the side. And much of the recent conversation about America’s ideal of religious freedom has paid lip service to this comforting tableau.”
