Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders brilliantly responded to conservatives during a speech at the private Christian college, Liberty University, Monday morning. When the moderator tried to trap Sanders into an uncomfortable moral position he dropped a bomb of truth. The moderator asked:
Sen. Sanders, you have talked in your campaign about how it is immoral to protect the billionaire class at the expense of the most vulnerable in society, obviously children. A majority of Christians would agree with you, but would also go further and say that children in the womb need our protection even more…How do you reconcile the two in your mind?
This is an area where we disagree. I do understand and I do believe that it is improper for the United States government or state government to tell every woman in this country the very painful and difficult choice that she has to make on that issue.
He then pointed out the Republican hypocrisy of their desire to have a small government and also regulate women’s medical choices:
I respect absolutely a family that says, ‘No, we’re not going to have an abortion.’ I understand that. I respect that,” he said. “But I would hope that other people respect the very painful and difficult choice that many women feel they have to make and don’t want the government telling them what they have to do.
No, no moral conundrum here, as his opponent Hillary Clinton has said, “no one is pro-abortion!” Being pro-life, to Sanders and the majority of America, doesn’t mean forcing women to make the choice that Uncle Sam has made for her regarding her uterus and what care she receives. It doesn’t mean de-funding Planned Parenthood or shutting down the government either. It does mean health care for children, mothers, and families. It does mean quality, free education for our youth and adults so that we have a competitive workforce.
Sanders is right, the right-wing consistently takes food from children’s mouths, healthcare from the vulnerable, and seems to not give one f*ck about children. Fetuses, on the other hand, are worth shutting down the government over even though most people do not support them doing so. Just like they do not care about children and families, but will cut any program to make the top 1 percent even richer. Our budget shows what Republicans actually care about, Bernie is right — it is immoral.
The students of Liberty University, it seems, were feeling the Bern.
