Bernie Sanders commented on Thursday’s CNN Republican debate without mincing words. Sanders made it clear that he, like most Americans, was unhappy with the overall tone of the GOP candidates:
What was really remarkable is the degree to which they avoided the major issues facing the American people and believe every single problem facing humanity is all attributed to Barack Obama. We seem to have forgotten that when Bush left office, 800,000 people were losing their jobs every single month, the world’s financial system was on the verge of collapse and our deficit was a record-breaking $1.4 trillion.
Sanders had a lot of frustration and dissatisfaction over the idea that there was virtually zero mention of issues like poverty, climate change and income inequality in any meaningful way:
I did not hear anybody say, ‘Oh, this is a planetary crisis, we have got to do something.’ Really? The federal government should not do something? No scientist that I know believes that.
I didn’t hear a word about the need to address the fact that 40 percent of African-American kids in this country are living in poverty, nor did I hear a word, by the way, about racial justice.
Bernie makes a really great and important point here. Iran, abortion, and increasing our military spending were mentioned more times than could easily be counted. The amount of times anyone talked meaningfully about our jobs problem, civil rights, income inequality, poverty or hunger could have been counted on one hand.
Bernie was also asked about Bobby Jindal making an off hand comment about him being a socialist. Bernie shrugged it off, explaining we are the only major country on earth where healthcare is not a right. He also brought up the fact that democratic socialist countries like Denmark and Sweden have free public college and guaranteed paid medical leave, coupled with extremely low rates of income inequality and childhood poverty.
Why are we the only major country on Earth that doesn’t guarantee paid family and medical leave so that when a working class woman has a baby, she’s not forced to be separated from her baby and go back to work?
All in all, Bernie clearly was the winner of the debate, making his thoughts very clear in the video below:
