Even admitting that “this is going to be a close election, regardless” doesn’t cause Debbie Wasserman-Schultz any pause on the lack of debates for the Democrats this year. In an interview with The Young Turks’ John Iadarola, it seems that Wasserman-Schultz is positive that despite the outcry by her constituency the DNC’s lack of debates is just fine.
During the interview, Iadarola makes several great suggestions on how to expand the debates, allowing more of the voter pool to have access to what Hillary Clinton called “substantive policy differences” between the candidates. Arguably the best way for most voters to compare the policy differences of the Democratic candidates is a side by side debate of the issues that matter to them. Despite the fact that this comparison will be very time intensive, and difficult, for Jane Q. Democrat to accomplish on her own, Wasserman-Shultz was a veritable fountain of excuses.
Her most difficult to fathom excuse is that the fairly intelligent Democratic voter pool probably won’t even watch debates if we have them because the reason that people watch the Republican Debates is that they are like “train wrecks,” and built around a reality TV star. Wow, that seems to be a really high opinion of Democrats.
Sorry, Ms. Wasserman-Schultz but Democrats aren’t as easily distracted by shiny objects, we want and deserve more debates so that we can actually get down to which candidates policies we really want to get behind. Stop treating Democrats like lemmings, we don’t want, nor need, to be lead to any particular candidate; despite your previous intertwinement with the Clinton campaign, we still want to make an informed decision.
