If you have never heard of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the gun-ho Arizona sheriff who is infamous for his iron fist disciplinary tactics and the creation of the brutal prison known as “Tent City”, all of that is about to change.
Sheriff Arpaio, a man who has proudly declared himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” and has all the compassion of a Las Vegas loan shark, announced this weekend he will be running security at Donald Trump’s upcoming rally in Fountain Hills Arizona. In an interview with Politico, the no-nonsense 83 year old Republican sheriff commented on what his role will be during Trump’s Arizona rally,
Here I’m gonna be kinda wearing two hats — in charge of the security there in the town and also participating, I would imagine, with Trump in the rally, so it makes it interesting, is going to be a lot of fun taking care of business there.
And what exactly is the Sheriff’s disturbing definition of “Taking care of business?” For the answer to that question, we need only to look at his long and sordid record.
In 1993, the good sheriff created the highly controversial, brutal outdoor prison known as “Tent City”, a prison that Arpaio himself lovingly refers to as a “Concentration Camp.” Among the many outrageous policies at Arpaio’s Arizona Gulag, including prisoners living in old Army surplus tents 24/7 while enduring temperatures that routinely reach well over 100 degrees, near starvation meal plans, and cold hard discipline that makes Guantanamo Bay look like a timeshare in The Hamptons, is his famous mandatory dress code requiring all prisoners to wear pink underwear. The fact that Sheriff Arpaio chooses to use his almost limitless power to dress 2000 hardened men in pink panties suggests that maybe something else is going on here beyond the normal day to day affairs of crime and punishment.
Not only has Arpaio come under fire for his appalling conditions at “Tent City” from groups like Amnesty International, he has had a laundry list of accusations levied against him, including; unlawful enforcement of immigration laws; abuse of power; misuse of funds; and election law violations among many others. Not to mention his Orwellian prison radio station KJOE broadcasting straight out of “Clockwork Orange” as it looks to indoctrinate prisoners with classical music in a twisted attempt to reeducate them.
So what does this Marvel Super Villain Team-Up of Sheriff Arpaio and Donald Trump mean for any would-be protesters this weekend? I don’t think you need to be a clairvoyant political scientist to see the potential dangers of putting a man like Sheriff Arpaio in charge of dealing with an already volatile situation of crowd control at a Trump rally. But don’t worry, when violence and absolute chaos breaks out this weekend, by Monday the Trump propaganda machine will convince his fanatical supporters that he is the victim and not the ones getting maced and beaten by Sheriff Arpaio’s goon squad.
