While Democratic lawmakers continued to occupy the House in an effort to force Republicans to (finally) bring a gun control bill to vote, their GOP counterparts have not been handling the situation well. And nobody is freaking out more than Texas’s oft-embarrassing Representative Louie Gohmert.
While Democrats were in the process of speaking up for the victims of gun violence and demanding Congress act, Gohmert charged the floor and began ranting about Muslims. For the Republican, the fact that guns kill tens of thousands of Americans each year is inconsequential compared to the threat of Muslim terrorists.
“Radical Islam killed these people!” Gohmert screamed pointing at the faces of some of the 49 victims of the Orlando nightclub mass shooting. As he continued to point and yell, some Democrats (correctly) pointed out that regardless of the shooter’s motives, he was able to accomplish his massacre using a gun.
Indeed, as America knows all too well, “Muslim terrorists” are only a small sliver of the enormous toll guns take on the country each year. Whether it’s a black church, a Planned Parenthood, or a movie theater, murderers of all stripes have two things in common: Their desire to commit mass murder and the instrument they choose to carry out their plan.
For Gohmert, the idea that Muslims are a threat and guns aren’t isn’t just ignorance, it’s ideological. For years, the Texas lawmaker has insisted that his fanatical hatred for immigrants was based, in part, on the fact that terrorists are sneaking into the country using Mexico. Needless to say, he’s a big fan of Trump’s giant wall fantasy. Here, for example, is how Gohmert handled the Boston Marathon bombing:
We know Al-Qaeda has camps on the Mexican border. We have people that are trained to act Hispanic when they are radical Islamists.
There was, of course, no evidence for Al-Qaeda camps in Mexico. No evidence for Muslims trying to “act Hispanic,” either. When the country was hurting, Gohmert decided to spew out lie after lie in order to fear-monger and spread anti-immigrant sentiment. It’s no surprise that he would be the one to charge the House floor and demand Democrats stop actually trying to find a real solution and instead turn their attention to the kind of conspiracy theories Gohmert routinely pulls from the dregs of the internet.
Thankfully, his colleagues seemed to be well-versed in ways in which to ignore and scoff at Gohmert. They’ve certainly had a lot of experience over the years.
