Trump’s National Security Adviser Shared Classified Intelligence With ‘Foreign Military Officers’

Hypocrisy, thy name is Donald Trump.

Despite running a campaign solely on the basis that Hillary Clinton didn’t handle her emails with enough precaution, Trump’s White House National Security Adviser is the one who risked CIA operations through sheer carelessness. It also may explain why the CIA, unlike the FBI, seems to extremely concerned about Trump’s upcoming presidency: They know the damage he can cause first hand.

A secret U.S. military investigation in 2010 determined that Michael T. Flynn, the retired Army general tapped to serve as national security adviser in the Trump White House, “inappropriately shared” classified information with foreign military officers in Afghanistan, newly released documents show.

Although Flynn lacked authorization to share the classified material, he was not disciplined or reprimanded after the investigation concluded that he did not act “knowingly” and that “there was no actual or potential damage to national security as a result,” according to Army records obtained by The Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act.

A few observations: First, Flynn is accused of doing precisely what Clinton had done – inadvertently exposed classified information. Unlike Clinton, Flynn’s classified info made its way into the hands of “foreign military officers in Afghanistan.” And also unlike Clinton, Flynn’s indiscretion was greeted with a shrug, whereas Clinton’s actions became a major campaign criticism. Even worse, Flynn himself – a conspiracy theorist who was fired from the Pentagon years ago – was one of many Trump attack dogs who spent the campaign slamming Hillary for her emails. He was known to lead “lock her up” chants at Trump rallies – over accusations that he surely knew were identical to those he himself was guilty of.

The extent of what Flynn “inappropriately shared” with foreign military officers is unknown because the Army’s investigation is still classified. It’s not exactly comforting to think he will be seated next to the next president in the Oval Office during important strategic meetings.

Selecting Flynn as his right-hand man speaks volumes about Trump’s character – or lack thereof. Already Trump has admitted that he has no intention of pursuing the criminal charges he swore he would use to “lock up” Hillary Clinton after the election. At a recent “victory rally” Trump told the crowd “that plays great before the election — now we don’t care, right?”

With Flynn serving as a constant reminder of this hypocrisy, it is abundantly clear that the one who doesn’t care is Trump himself.
