Donald Trump’s rally in Ashville, N.C., went completely off the rails on Monday night. Police arrested five people and are now looking for a man who sucker-punched an elderly grandmother in the face so hard he knocked her into her oxygen tank.
Police have issued an arrest warrant for Richard Campbell of Edisto Island, South Carolina for the assault on 69-year-old Shirley Teter.
In an interview on Tuesday, Teter said she has spent her life protesting injustice and explained that she attended Monday’s protest “because I ran into another situation that was sickening my heart.” Protesters had gathered outside of the venue ahead of the rally, where they faced off with Trump supporters.
“Whenever groups of them would start chanting ‘Trump! Trump! Trump! Trump!’ I would chant back, ‘Dump! Dump! Dump! Dump!’ It was kind of comical,” Teter said.
But following the rally, Teter said something happened that was a first in all the years she has been protesting.
“I said, ‘You better learn to speak Russian,’ and I said, ‘The first two words are going to be ha ha.’ He stopped in his tracks, and he turned around and just cold-cocked me,” Teter said.
Without any warning, Campbell punched Teter dead in the face so hard she fell into her oxygen, cut her elbow, and was left with sore ribs and an aching jaw. She ended up going to the hospital for her injuries and said she is just grateful that no bones were broken in the attack.
Police said that they didn’t arrest Campbell when the incident occurred because they hadn’t witnessed the actual punch, but they have now issued a warrant for his arrest. Teter said the officers were wonderful and she thanked them for riding her home. However, she did add that they “better arrest that son-of-a-bitch.”
Teter said she has one question, and it is the same one just about everybody reading this most likely has as well: Is sucker-punching a 69-year-old grandma in the face “deplorable?”
