During a rally in New Hampshire on Thursday, after whipping them into a nice creamy xenophobic froth, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump took questions, comments, and suggestions from the crowd.
His final question came from a white-haired older woman, who seemed as sweet as apple pie. She thanked Trump for his “efforts” on behalf of veterans before she asked a question regarding “homeland security and jobs.”
Why aren’t we putting our retirees, our military retirees, on that border or in TSA?” the woman asked. “Get rid of all these hibijabis they wear at TSA. I’ve seen them myself,” she said, gesturing toward her face. (The woman seemed to be referring to the hijab, the headscarf worn by many Muslim women.)
Trump responded, “I understand.”
“We need the veterans back in there to take it. They fought for this country and defended it. They’ll still do it,” the woman said.
Instead of gently correcting the woman’s blatant racism, Trump went on to reassure the Islamaphobic golden girl and her like-minded bigots.
And we are looking at that. We are looking at that. We’re looking at a lot of things
Okay. Well, that didn’t sound ominous at all.
Trump went on to tout his endorsement from the so-called “toughest sheriff in America” Maricopa County, Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio as well as the National Border Patrol Council Union, which has 16,500 members.
We witness these scenes play out at every Trump event. Many people believe that the dredges of society come from underground to occupy Trump rallies, but in truth, these people live in broad daylight. A lot of them are friends, family, co-workers, people we all know. A lot of them have just hidden much of their true selves for years, until now.
Trump, like most Republican politicians, continues to play to the lowest common denominator; the only difference is that Trump connects with them on a deeper level by echoing the way they talk.
People like the casually racist woman in the above video, never consider themselves to be racists. They just want to see nice, wholesome, Christian, white faces in positions of power. Now is that really asking too much?
