If nothing else has proved that Donald Trump is painfully ignorant when it comes to what the United States is supposed to be about, this will: during the Values Voters Summit Trump wistfully imagined a version of the United States of America in which all Americans worship only “one God.” A theocratic utopia and catnip for the conservative Christian audience.
“Imagine what our country could accomplish if we started working together as one people, under one God, saluting one flag.“
This closing remark wasn’t even the most disturbing part of that speech, scarily enough, but merits a deeper look. Why? Because of the familiar hallmarks of fascism, which include religion becoming intertwined with government and unceasing and vehement nationalism.
ONE God? So much for freedom of religion, and separation of church and state.
He may as well have just promise to bring back persecution of non-Christians, oh, wait… in the same speech he went over the return to Christian supremacy in America.
In a Trump America, would we just start imprisoning atheists, spiritualists, Buddhists, Muslims, Pagans, Jews, and Taoists? We could maybe treat them the same way that a Trump administration would treat homosexuals, transgender people, undocumented immigrants, non-white people, and basically anyone else not willing to profess to be like them.
The fact is that according to the Pew Research Center, America is becoming less religious. Only about 63 percent of Americans are even absolutely one hundred percent positive that a “god” exists. However, a much higher percentage claim some religious affiliation, around 77 percent. Most of that is Catholic, Protestant, and other Christian faiths. The rest, millions of people, believe in other religions or none. They are just as American.
And the fastest growing sector seems to be “unaffiliated”:
A growing share of Americans are religiously unaffiliated, including some who self-identify as atheists or agnostics as well as many who describe their religion as “nothing in particular.” Altogether, the religiously unaffiliated (also called the “nones”) now account for 23% of the adult population, up from 16% in 2007.
It is certain that there is still a Christian majority in this country, and that is okay. What is not okay, in any way, would be that majority forcing the minority to worship the god that the majority has chosen. The CONSTITUTION guarantees religious freedom. Period. End of discussion.
Meanwhile, Trump’s rhetoric changes chameleon-like in front of crowds of white voters. He says what they want to hear, though it seems to fail him completely in front of minorities.
However, he is spelling out for all to clearly read: If you are not all white, all Christian, all American, and rich, Trump is going to erase your constitutional protections. He is going to build walls, deport people, and create a country in which you are perfectly free to be exactly like the majority or GTFO.
Seriously, even though he would have to literally trample the Constitution to do so, he may just be naming three Supreme Court Justices to help him get there. Even more motivation to get out and vote Blue, the only ticket with enough support to actually defeat the oligarchic fascism Trump espouses.
