Trump is under fire for waiting two weeks to recognize the four soldiers who died in Niger, and for claiming he writes and calls their families while previous presidents didn’t. Apparently, he hasn’t called all of them, and he even makes promises to some and promptly breaks them. A report in the Washington Post details out just how upset some of these Gold Star families are.
Trump claimed that he’d called or written every family of someone who had been killed – meaning he claims he’s contacted at least 20 Gold Star families. The Post reached out to 13 of those families, and half said they hadn’t heard from Trump at all. Euvince Brooks, whose son, Sergeant Roshain Brooks, was killed in Iraq in August, said he hasn’t heard from Trump and Trump’s comments that he’d called everyone really pissed him off:
“I said to my daughter, ‘Can you teach me to tweet, so I can tweet at the president and tell him he’s a liar?’” he said. “You know when you hear people lying, and you want to fight? That’s the way I feel last night. He’s a damn liar.”
Others, such as Chris Baldridge, the father of Army Corporal Dillon Baldridge, got Trump’s flat-out lies over the phone. Corporal Baldridge was killed in Afghanistan, and Baldridge and his wife feel their son was murdered there. Trump reportedly offered them $25,000 out of his own personal account:
“He said, ‘I’m going to write you a check out of my personal account for $25,000,’ and I was just floored,” Baldridge said. “I could not believe he was saying that, and I wish I had it recorded because the man did say this. He said, ‘No other president has ever done something like this,’ but he said, ‘I’m going to do it.’”
Trump also reportedly promised he’d have his staff set up some kind of a fundraiser, but neither promise materialized, at least, not until Trump was called out again for breaking promises. Their response was basically to say, “The check has been sent,” and then to blast the media for twisting Baldridge’s situation to suit an agenda. Really, the White House takes what’s happening and twists it to suit their agenda of turning Trump into America’s golden savior.
This is also in addition to Trump telling Myeshia Johnson, widow of Sergeant La David Johnson, who was killed in Niger, that her husband knew what he’d signed up for “but I guess it hurts anyway.”And there are the Khans, who aren’t part of the Post’s report, but with whom Trump publicly feuded last year because they were making him look like the vile shitstain he is while supporting Hillary Clinton.
While other families said they’d spoken to Trump and were touched, what this does is reinforce the fact that Trump really doesn’t care about Gold Star families and their sacrifices. It also reinforces the fact that he’s not above lying to make himself look good in the face of sharp criticism, even if it means hurting some of the last people he should ever hurt.
Bottom line is that Trump is a jerk.
